What is bursitis?
Bursitis is inflammation of the bursa, tiny sacs of synovial liquid which facilitate the gliding between muscles, tendons and ligaments against bones thereby avoiding friction between them.
Frequent areas affected are shoulders, hips and knees. Bursitis can be a consequence of inflammation, a surgical intervention or repetitive movements of the impacted limb.
What are the most common signs and symptoms of arthrosis?
- Pain when moving the affected joint
- Heat, redness, swelling
The severity of symptoms depends on the degree of inflammation.
What causes bursitis?
Thickening or deformation of a tendon due to repetitive movements can cause bursitis because the bursa are subjected to significant friction. Traumas (example: fall on the shoulder) can cause bursitis as well as prolonged weight bearing (example: kneeling). Some surgical interventions can cause bursitis due to the inflammatory process following a surgery.
